Julie London

JulieJulie London (nee Peck; September 26 1926 - October 18 in 2000) was an American actor and singer whose career spanned more than 40 years. London, a torch singer well-known for her soft, mellow vocals and languid contralto voice, recorded more than thirty albums of pop and jazz standards between 1955-1969. The song she sang on "Cry Me a River", a track she introduced on her debut album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001. London was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for her character as Dixie McCall, a nurse on the television show Emergency! London was born in Santa Rosa to vaudevillian parents. Her professional career began as an actress , while she worked as an elevator operator in downtown Los Angeles. London's 35-year acting career started in the film industry in 1944 which included roles for female leads in several westerns, co-starring with Rock Hudson in The Fat Man (1951) as well as Robert Taylor and John Cassavetes in Saddle the Wind (1958) along with Gary Cooper in Man of the West (1958) and alongside Robert Mitchum in The Wonderful Country (1959). In the late 1950s, she signed a recording deal with Liberty Records, marking the beginning of her professional music career. She released her final studio album in 1969 but continued to have success as the role of a female nurse Dixie McCall in the television show Emergency! (1972-1979), in which she appeared alongside her husband Bobby Troup. The show was created by her former husband Jack Webb.
